about

The exhibition "Lietuvos spaudos fotografia 2024", where we invite you to get acquainted with the best shots of press photographers of the past year, is coming to Birštonas. This is an exhibition of the works of the finalists of the twenty-third "Lithuanian press photography" competition. This year, a competent international judging panel carefully evaluated over 3,000 works submitted in 10 categories for professionals. Among the respected members of the commission are professional photographers Damian Chrobak (Poland), Svetlana Batura (Lithuania), Eero Vabamägi (Estonia), Renaldas Malychas (Lithuania) and poet, editor-in-chief of the literary magazine "Metai" Antanas Šimkus. This time ten competition categories for professional photographers were supplemented by a new "Open category" for photography students and enthusiasts. This category also attracted a lot of attention from the participants - nearly 40 beginner photographers from all over Lithuania submitted their works. "Open category", exhibited next to professional works, encourages a dynamic dialogue, revealing the diverse landscape of Lithuanian visual journalism.
In addition to the main competition program, the exhibition presents a special retrospective, which is jointly curated by the Lithuanian Press Photographers Department of LŽS and the Representation of the European Commission in Lithuania. This part of the exhibition allows visitors to get to know 20 years of Lithuania's membership in the European Union through the prism of photojournalism. This is a unique opportunity to see cultural, social and societal changes. Free movement in the EU has given Lithuanians many opportunities. The young generation, quickly adapting to the globalizing world, took up international travel and cultural exchange. This newfound mobility fostered a spirit of openness and a broader outlook. It gave a boost to innovation and entrepreneurship as Lithuanians returned home with new ideas and a global perspective to contribute to their country's growth. The EU's focus on human rights and social justice is also reflected in the country's changing social dynamics. These photos bear witness to the growth and change of Lithuania and its people within the European family – it is a story of adaptation, vigor and the story of a nation boldly taking its place on the world stage.
The Lithuanian Press Photography contest, which has been running for more than two decades, has been spreading the culture of responsible visual storytelling in the country. He encourages photographers to improve their skills and learn from each other. Therefore, we invite you to view the exhibition "Photography of the Lithuanian Press 2024", which will be exhibited at the Birštonas Cultural Center until July 6. Later, the exhibition will travel to other Lithuanian cities.
