The capital of Lithuanian mineral water is in the postmark

The new stamp is the third one dedicated to Lithuanian resorts. Stamps dedicated to Druskininkai and Palanga have already appeared before.

The resort on the territory of Birštonas was founded in the 19th century. in the second half - then not only the exploration of salty mineral springs began here, but also the construction of sanatoriums and summer houses.

Between the wars, the Lithuanian Red Cross signed a contract with the Department of Health and undertook to modernize the resort by installing mud baths, water supply, sewage and electric lighting. In this way, Birštonas was revived, sanatoriums, mud baths and mineral water spas appeared in it.

An interesting but rarely known fact is that in 1945 The writer Balys Sruoga, who returned from the concentration camp, was treated in Baltoja villa in Birštona. It was in Biršton that his famous work "Forest of the Gods" was written.

An integral part of Birštonas - mineral water is extracted there. This year marks the 145th anniversary of the discovery of the mineral water source "Viktorija" in the resort, later named after "Vytautas". Exactly 100 years ago, this mineral water was bottled in Kaunas, the capital of that time. in 1964 it was started in Biršton itself, where the oldest mineral water bottling company in Lithuania still operates.
